Peru has a long history of cotton cultivation and textile craftsmanship. Peruvian Pima Cotton is harvested exclusively by hand, a careful process that helps preserve the long fibers and reduces the mechanical stress associated with machine picking.

Hand harvesting is a distinction of Peruvian Pima Cotton, rather than a promise that applies to every cotton labeled Pima. American-grown Pima cotton, including cotton sold under the Supima trademark, is commonly harvested by machine. Both are extra-long-staple cottons; their origin and harvesting practices differ.
