Defining Versatility in a T-Shirt

Defining Versatility in a T-Shirt

An ideal wardrobe accentuates your lifestyle. That means you should always have pieces that are available for going out with friends, attending a business conference, or simply enjoying a cold one on a summer day at your favorite outdoor spot for people watching.

The challenge is finding various items of clothing that can achieve this versatility without expanding your closet size to that of another bedroom. It helps to look at choosing your clothing options through the lens of possibility instead of strict use. So, you would seek out a bundle of men’s premium t-shirts not because they fit a specific event, but because they can be used across a wide range of activities and styles.

You also want to think about complimentary items. Like our t-shirts example, you can toss these clothing pieces under a blazer to elevate your look or wear them with a pair of shorts for a fun day by the beach. The goal is fashion versatility – and it doesn’t have to be as hard as it sounds.

What is Versatility in Clothing?

The simplest definition of fashion versatility is a single piece that can be used for many applications. This means you can use the same premium black t-shirt by itself, with other clothing items, or as the basis for a creative look when you want to stand out.

A good example is a graphic t-shirt with some sort of logo versus a premium solid-color tee. A graphic t-shirt can often be fun and expressive in creative ways, but it will not upscale easily and cannot layer well because of the imagery on the front.

A premium t-shirt in classic tones works with practically anything. Everyone from the struggling SoHo artist, to the jet-setter business mogul, uses a plain tee.

If it helps, let’s look at how modern t-shirts are versatile by exploring what we do not want in our tees. This will narrow down the style and features you should look for when shopping.

The Common Traits of a Non-Versatile T-Shirt

1 – The Curved Hem

A curved hem on a t-shirt is a design feature in which the bottom edge of the t-shirt is cut in a curve rather than a straight line. This can give the t-shirt a more modern and stylish look and can also be more flattering on some body types.

This style can be achieved by cutting the fabric in a curve or by using a unique sewing technique to create a curved seam. T-shirts with curved hems will also often have a longer length in the back than in the front, creating a slight high-low effect.

The reason we do not like this type of tee for versatility is that the curve will only show partially behind other layers like a blazer or a cardigan, making you look disheveled without clean lines.

2 – V-Neck

A V-neck is a type of neckline on a t-shirt that is shaped like a "V" and dips down in the front to form a point. The V-neck design is popular because it can be flattering on many body types and can also help to elongate the neck and draw attention to the face. This perceived elongation is particularly appealing for men who would like to appear taller (and lack the requisite balance for high heels!).

This t-shirt is cut with a deeper neckline than a traditional crew neck t-shirt and may have a collar that extends down into the "V" shape. The depth of the V-neck can vary, with some t-shirts having a shallow V-neck and others having a deeper V-neck that extends almost to the collarbone.

While a “V” neckline can look great in a t-shirt, you sacrifice versatility when it comes to pairing it under an outer layer. In fact, we would suggest going for the V-neckline in choosing a sweater since it will give you the same desired look without sacrificing the versatility of the Tee.

3 – Pocket Ts

A pocket t-shirt is a type of shirt with a small pocket on the front, typically over the left breast. The pocket is usually simple, square-shaped, and sewn onto the front of the t-shirt. While technically having a functional use of holding small items, it is generally chosen for decorative purposes.

You’ve probably seen these shirts from films with nerdy pocket protectors or any other trope surrounding mechanics. While they are available in a variety of fabrics and neck styles, they are not easily paired with button-up shirts or blazers because the pocket shows up too well and makes a bump in the lay of the clothing.

4 – Length of T

How low or high a t-shirt falls against your waist is critical to looking and feeling good no matter the occasion. Too long and it will look like a poorly fitting undershirt that should be tucked in to hide its appearance. Too short and you will be self-conscious of getting the coverage you need for a comfortable fit when sitting or bending over.

You want to find a set of men’s premium t-shirts that intentionally tailor the length of their t-shirts for versatility across a wide range of applications and lifestyle events. You also want to ensure the t-shirts are pre-shrunk so there are no surprises after their first ride in the spin cycle. Lastly, since no company can guarantee a perfect fit for every single body type, you want to ensure you are only shopping with companies that provide a no-risk return policy with ample time and opportunity to try their products on.

5 – Traditional Ribbed Neckline

This is by far the most common neckline used for t-shirts and from a design perspective really cannot be faulted for lack of versatility. The downsides of the traditional ribbed neckline are longevity and formality.

These types of necklines tend to feature elastics inside the ribbing which degrades over time and multiple uses. This causes a loose, bunching up around the neck that looks worn down and out of place. A stitched neckline without elastic solves this problem. It also can create a more distinguished look due to subtle detail of the stitching as opposed to the more common ribbed style.

6 – Quality

Quality is the last and probably most critical factor determining a shirt’s versatility. This is the construction of materials, overall design, and durability. Versatility requires re-wearability, and many Ts are designed to only be worn a few times before they start to break down, either from the graphics or because of the materials.

Your best bet is to find a company offering premium-grade fabrics that hold up well to frequent wearing and washing, so the colors do not fade over time.
